Lion Rock - Hong Kong's iconic hike is popular both as a day and a night time hike. We started the climb in the late afternoon just in time to catch the sunset at the top and then walked back down as the city lit up with lights. Best of both worlds!
Difficulty Rating: 5/10
Duration: 3-3.5 hours
Cell Service: 5/5
Instagrammability: 5/5
The climb is long with a lot of steps but the view makes it worth it. Make sure you go on a clear day so that the view is visible (we've been on one of HK's foggier days and we couldn't see a single building). Fortunately, this time, the day was perfect and the pictures came out great!
How to Get There:
Hiking Directions:
The taxi should drop you off at the entrance of "Lion Rock Park". Do not enter the park, instead, walk up the hill slightly, until you see this sign, which marks the start of the trail.
There are signs that mark "Lion Rock Peak" throughout the trail, so it is very easy to follow.
After getting to the peak, follow the signs marked "Sha Tin Pass" to get back down.
Once off the trail, you will get to a road on a steep hill*. Walk down the hill until Sha Tin Pass Estate. This walk is be approximately 30 minutes long.
On your left, there will be a minibus stop for route 37M. Take this bus back to Wong Tai Sin MTR Station.
Note: You can also start the hike from the other side of the trail, which would be the West Entrance. There is also a park on that end, which is called "Lion Rock Community Garden".
*Watch out for monkeys on this hill! Just to stay on the safe side, be sure to not have any food out in front of them.
Not only is this classic hike gorgeous, but the rock formations make it a fun climb!
